Most expats spend their first two or three months in a serviced apartment, then choose a neighbourhood once they know their school and office routes.

Serviced residences roll rent, utilities, cleaning, wi-fi, gym and pool into one monthly bill, and range from studios to family-sized three-bedroom units. Some accept pets.

Kemang is the classic expat area, Menteng is leafy and close to the embassies, SCBD and Mega Kuningan put you in the business district, and Pondok Indah and Cipete suit families. Unfurnished leases usually need six to twelve months' rent upfront.

Thamrin, PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Jakarta has studio to two-bedroom suites in Thamrin Nine, a short walk from Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia. In the business district, Ascott Sudirman sits at Ciputra World 2, Oakwood Premier Cozmo is in Mega Kuningan, Fraser Place Setiabudi offers large gardens and children's facilities beside Setiabudi One, and Fraser Residence Sudirman on Jl. Setiabudi Raya is a short walk from MRT Setiabudi Astra. For a longer furnished rental in the south, Kemang Apartment by Pudjiadi Prestige has one- to three-bedroom units in Kemang.
