You can live in Jakarta for years on English alone, and plenty of people do. But Bahasa Indonesia is one of the more approachable languages a Westerner can pick up — no tones, no grammatical gender, no verb conjugation and no tenses in the European sense — and even a few months of study changes your daily experience of the city. Negotiating with a driver, dealing with a landlord, talking to your children's nanny, or getting through an immigration counter all become straightforward rather than fraught.

The schools listed here teach Indonesian specifically to foreign learners, which is a different discipline from teaching it to Indonesian schoolchildren. Look for BIPA-trained instructors — Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing is the recognised framework for teaching the language to foreign speakers — and for curricula aligned to CEFR levels if you want a certificate that means something outside Indonesia. Formats vary: one-to-one lessons, small groups of three or four, in-company training delivered at your office, live online classes, and intensive immersion programmes that compress conversational competence into two or three weeks.

Most providers will send a teacher to your home or office, which matters more than it sounds when a cross-town trip can eat two hours. Corporate packages are common for companies onboarding foreign managers, and several schools also teach English and Mandarin, so families studying in parallel can use one provider. A few offer sworn translation alongside tuition, useful for immigration and business filings.
